WHEN digital TV was introduced, we were promised that one of the benefits would be that we wouldn’t need to listen to often unbearable commentators because we could switch to stadium audio only.
The BBC did this for a period with rugby union and if I remember correctly the options even included a referee feed. It was excellent and informative.
This idea seems to have faded but I beg the authorities to reintroduce it without delay.
The current euro has demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that while some commentators are excellent, as are some summaries, the majority are stupid and whose importance is eclipsed only by their incompetence.
Don’t they realize that I can see what’s going on without them saying it in one-syllable words?
Don’t they recognize the appalling overuse of “that” instead of “the” (as in the pass, the ball, the right side), “his” / “she” (as in his head, his hand) who normally form the English language?
And all of these people are paid huge sums, which somehow come out of our pockets.
Come on, broadcasters. Please give the general public what they want and deserve.
