‘This Is Us’ Star Jon Huertas on Miguel and Rebecca’s Season 6 Surprising Journey

It’s us is only a few episodes away from its big final season and already nerves are on edge over the impending heartbreak that is sure to come for the Pearsons.

But there are always bright spots amid the heartbreaking drama, and for Season 6, that took the form of the relationship between Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Miguel (Jon Huertas). More recently, in the episode “One Giant Leap”, Rebecca reflected on the version of herself that Miguel ended up with (especially after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis) compared to the one that Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) had in the past during their marriage.

Near the end of the episode, she asks Miguel to start salsa dancing again after they called it quits a while ago, setting the stage for new fun times in their ongoing relationship. So what else does Season 6 have up its sleeve for Rebecca and Miguel fans? Huertas teases, “I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised and delighted with how the story between Rebecca and Miguel is unfolding.”

The actor, who is set to direct the third installment of Season 6, ‘Four Fathers’, reveals that “there are going to be a range of emotions” regarding Rebecca and Miguel’s situation in series. “I think there’s going to be excitement about what’s possible between these two characters.”

While Miguel has worked his way into the hearts of most fans over the seasons, Huertas promises this season will change any doubts viewers might have about the strength of Rebecca and Miguel’s love. “Rebecca and Miguel’s relationship evolves from just friends, two people mourning the loss of someone they both loved, to sadness, to joy,” Huertas says.

But Season 6 builds “a real appreciation for this couple and what Miguel means to the Pearson family, and then what Miguel means to Rebecca ultimately,” the actor reveals. Despite the joyful moments they might find together, Huertas goes on to say that he recently filmed “one of the most heartbreaking moments I’ve ever played on screen as an actor,” for this season. “It was amazing to be a part of it with Mandy Moore.”

So does that mean we’ll finally get the original Rebecca-Miguel romance episode in its own right? When we asked Huertas, he said, “I think there’s going to be [a] Miguel and Rebecca episode that has to do with romance for sure. It remains to be seen whether this will be the start of their relationship or not.

As for the biggest question hanging over Miguel and Rebecca’s story, we also asked Huertas where his character was in that recurring flash-forward sequence. “I can’t comment,” he teases. “I don’t even know if I know one hundred percent where Miguel is, but you’ll just have to wait and see.”

Stay tuned for Huertas’ directing in the next episode of It’s us and for more screen time from Rebecca-Miguel as the show’s sixth and final season continues on NBC.
