Sky presenter on the similarities between Roy Keane and Graeme Souness

Roy Keane and Graeme Souness are ‘very similar’ when it comes to punditry, according to Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates.

During their playing careers, both men were known for taking no prisoners and neither has changed much since breaking into the TV world.

While colleagues such as Micah Richards and Jamie Redknapp may be more in tune with the mindset of the modern gamer, Keane and Souness can always be counted on to roll their eyes at some of the behaviors they see on field.

Cates, who has worked with both men for several seasons now, can definitely see the similarities between the two.

“The same things bore them.”

“I think Graeme and Roy are very similar,” the presenter said on the latest episode of the Old Firm Facts podcast.

“They see the game the same way. The same things make them roll their eyes, the same things annoy them, and they also enjoy the same kind of things about games.

“I think it’s just been really motivated and I think sometimes a lot of the very harsh criticism that comes from both of them is frustration because they love the game so much and they enjoyed their chance. to play it at the highest level so much.

“It wouldn’t occur to them to show up and not absolutely fly in everything they could do, and sometimes cross the line when they did.

“They just find it unfathomable that someone doesn’t have the same attitude. They just don’t understand it.

Two great captains.

Cates had known Souness from a young age, as she is the daughter of former Scottish Liverpool team-mate Kenny Dalglish, but it has only been in recent years that she has worked closely with Keane.

Her take on the two men’s shared style of punditry is interesting and she’s right that it’s not far removed from their personalities on the pitch.

Souness was captain of the all-conquering Liverpool side in the early 1980s before Keane followed suit in leading Manchester United to several trophies at the turn of the millennium.

The pair have since dabbled in management, with varying degrees of success, but it looks like the Sky Sports studio is where they’ll be staying for now.

For Cates as a presenter, wanting to provide top-notch entertainment for viewers, she’s probably not complaining.
