American actor Neil Patrick Harris has joined the cast of Doctor Who and is filming scenes which will air next year, the BBC has announced.
The news came after it was announced that Sex education‘s Ncuti Gatwa, 29, will become the 14th Doctor on the popular BBC series, after Jodie Whittaker revealed last July that she would be leaving the show.
Patrick Harris also joins newcomer Yasmin Finney, who is set to take on the role of Rose. Finney recently gained recognition for her role as Elle Argent in the Netflix hit Heart stroke.
The new cast is filming scenes set to air in 2023 as part of the show’s 60th anniversary.
Patrick Harris’ role in the BBC One sci-fi show has yet to be revealed.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said: “It is a huge honor for me to open the doors of our studio to the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what he plays ?
“You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you what we’re shooting now isn’t to scale. Doctor, beware!”

Davies, who was responsible for Doctor Whoin 2005, will return to celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary in 2023, the BBC previously announced.
He worked with Patrick Harris on the hit Channel 4 mini-drama It’s a sinin which the American star played Savile Row tailor Henry Coltrane.
