Daytona Beach tourism leaders seek to rename city for visitors

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Daytona Beach tourism officials are looking to move away from its rowdy ‘Spring Break’ destination and transform the city into a more upscale destination and they know it will take more than publicity to make the switch.

“The brand of any destination, any business, is what people say about you,” said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Baker said cleaning the brand was their top priority.

“We are going to be even more communicative with heads of government and municipal and municipal staff about what we hear from our visitors,” she said.

At a recent meeting, the bureau and other tourism officials in the region discussed dropping the reputation of ‘spring break’, leading government leaders to clean the main gateways. by the sea, like International Speedway Boulevard, and to get even more developers to move into repairing some of the dilapidated buildings and vacant lots.

The office, along with a county advertising committee, hired a consultant to create a plan of attack.

“We just got eight months of record earnings from tax revenue on the bed,” said Campbell Baker.

Newer upscale hotels have recently moved in and others, like The Plaza, are investing millions in renovations right now.

“We need bigger and better entertainment. We need more refined shopping, ”said Bob Davis, president of the Lodging and Hospitality Association of Volusia County.

Davis lobbied for this change. He said they needed more amenities to keep pace, both for visitors and residents.

“We are welcoming more clients with sustainable incomes who want a better place to spend their vacation. No one has a beach like us, ”he said.

The board of directors is currently developing timelines and data for investors. Final approval of the plan will take place in March.
