Birmingham is always finding new ways to support its residents. The city is supporting Birmingham-based comedian Jermaine ‘FunnyMaine’ Johnson as he takes the next step: the library. Read on to find out how our favorite funny guy landed a seat on the Birmingham Public Library Board.
The new member
Birmingham City Council’s Education Committee, which oversees Birmingham’s public library system, has nominated seats for six potential new members, including comedian FunnyMaine. The committee voted unanimously to recommend his appointment and the final vote was taken by City Council this morning.
According to Birmingham Councilor Clinton Woods, the council was looking for new perspectives when selecting appointees to the library board, particularly around the controversy over the closure of four Birmingham libraries. These libraries include:
- North Avondale
- East Ensley
“I appreciate all the hard work our Board members have done in the past and look forward to working with the new Board members. I expect to have good support and vision to move our library forward.
Janine Langston, Executive Director, Birmingham Public Library Board
Make La Ville Magique laugh
FunnyMaine has been the source of laughs in Birmingham and beyond since 2005. He is a writer, comedian, actor and radio personality. FunnyMaine won a following in Birmingham, but reached a wider audience with its comedic college football videos. In fact, one of his videos gained over 2 million views in less than two weeks in 2016.
He was even listed as one of the 100 most influential black people in the country by The Root in 2020, so it’s no mystery why he now sits on the board.
CURIOSITY: According to its website, FunnyMaine received a standing ovation after its first performance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
