The dispute between Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro over the Amazon rainforest has gotten uglier. On Thursday, the Brazilian president asked the Titanic fame for “keeping her mouth shut,” according to CNN. For those who don’t know, Leonardo DiCaprio has openly criticized the Bolsonaro regime, which he blames for endemic deforestation in the Amazon rainforests. Notably, the Brazilian president had previously accused DiCaprio of funding fires that burned down the Amazon rainforest in 2019. In a former Facebook Live broadcast, he claimed, “Leonardo DiCaprio, damn it, you’re collaborating on the fire of the Amazon,” added claiming that the actor is part of an international campaign against Brazil.
Brazil’s president tells DiCaprio to ‘shut up’
Now, during a recent interview, Bolsonaro was quoted by CNN as saying “Now DiCaprio must know that it was the very president of the World Trade Organization who said that without Brazilian agribusiness, the world would be hungry. So DiCaprio better keep his mouth shut instead of saying anything.”
The Hollywood actor has not yet responded to the Brazilian president’s statement.
What happened between DiCaprio and Bolsonaro?
It just so happens that a few days ago, Leonardo DiCaprio took to Twitter to urge Brazilian civilians to register to vote in the upcoming elections due to be held in October. In doing so, DiCaprio wrote, “Brazil is home to the Amazon and other ecosystems critical to climate change. What happens there affects us all, and the vote of young people is essential to driving change for a healthy planet.”
