Ben Fordham bursts into tears over 2gb radio over family death

Ben Fordham burst into tears over 2 GB this morning when announcing the passing of his stepfather.

“I wanted to share some personal news with you that my wife Jodie’s father Ross passed away on Tuesday night,” the Sydney Breakfast Radio personality said.

“Ross has been battling cancer for a number of years, it’s been really bad for a few months, and for the last few weeks he’s been in hospice care and he’s been taken care of a lot.

“He had the opportunity to say goodbye, we were all there to say goodbye, including all the grandchildren.”

In one particularly heart-wrenching radio track, Fordham struggled to speak as he remembered his wife, Channel 7 presenter Jodie Speers, returning home Tuesday afternoon after visiting her father.

“It was clear from the tears streaming down his face that he didn’t have long to go,” Fordham said. “My kids were amazing… my daughter, Pearl, ran over to Jodie and gave her a big hug. My little girl, Goldie, who is just a baby, she knew what was going on, she started saying “daddy”, that’s what they call him.

Fordham described Ross as a “big guy” and explained that his stepfather was a structural engineer who worked on the cauldron at the Sydney Olympics which unfortunately malfunctioned during the opening ceremony.

“Ross always assured me it wasn’t his part of the team, it was the mechanical part of the team and he thinks he knew from the start that it was going to be a long time for this thing to work. “said Fordham.

As he wrapped up the emotional segment, the 2GB host said, “Ross, we love you mate, and thank you so much for being a great step dad to me.”

The sad news of Ross Speers’ death comes after Fordham lost his own father, John Fordham, in 2019.

John, who was a celebrity agent, has died after a long battle with throat cancer.

Talk to Sky News Last October, Fordham revealed what he had learned about his father’s life.

“The big lesson I learned from dad, in regards to his later years, we were sitting having lunch and sometimes he had those conversations where he was like, ‘you don’t want to leave anything unsaid'”, Fordham told Chris Smith.

“He was always very open about how much he loved us and how much he had respect for all of us.

“I once said, ‘If you love us so much, why don’t you all take us all to Hawaii for a vacation? “And he did. He robbed the whole family.”

“I think about things like that and I go, you know what, he didn’t die wondering. He seized all these opportunities. He didn’t miss a thing. “
