A young radio presenter from Andover will host a national show this weekend

A young radio presenter from Andover will present on a national radio station this week, it has been announced.

Luis Wyatt will replace another presenter on Saturday night (July 9) to host the dance show on Virgin Radio Pride UK.

The 19-year-old attended Winton Community Academy, where he got his first taste of broadcasting. He spent most of his free time in a storage closet turned into a radio studio.

Luis said, “I remember no other student was interested in it and was the only one with the broadcast bug!”

After leaving Winton, he switched to local station Andover Radio. Just a year later, he won the ‘Best Male Presenter’ award at the 2020 Community Radio Awards, which is a national award show.

A judge said: “If you had told me that Luis had been on the air for decades, I wouldn’t have questioned you. Her style is engaging and cheeky. If I was a program manager, I would poach him immediately! “.

Since then Luis has presented shows on a number of radio stations in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Surrey.

After graduating from The Global Academy, a London-based media college, Luis got his big break in commercial radio by joining big names like Graham Norton and Chris Evans on the Virgin Radio Pride lineup. Luis returns to the station this Saturday night replacing another presenter to host the dance show.

The award-winning pop-up station, created by Virgin Radio, is back this summer by popular demand with a program packed with the best pop music of the past 20 years, plus all the biggest community talking points in a big celebration of LGBTQ+ culture.

Luis continued: “I can’t wait to get back to Virgin Radio Pride this Saturday. I remember listening to Chris Evans on Radio 2 every morning on my way to Anton School. To say that I will now be on the same station as hosts like this, whom I spent my childhood listening to, is super exciting!

Currently Luis plays an important role in the regeneration plan at Andover. He presents online videos for InAndover by Andover BID, which promotes downtown businesses.

Residents may also recognize that Luis was crowned Carnival Prince in 2012, hosting events such as turning on the town’s Christmas lights or doing a 24-hour radio show for children in need.

This month Luis was also announced as co-host of the 2022 Pride Of Andover Awards alongside TV star Jordan Wylie.

You can listen to Luis’ show on Saturdays from 10pm to midnight anywhere in the UK online at virginradio.co.uk, via the Virgin Radio app or on DAB digital radio in London and Scotland.
